Invisalign® FAQs
How long do I need to wear Invisalign® retainers?
After completing your Invisalign® treatment, retainers are essential to maintain your new smile. Retainers are similar to the clear aligners you’ve been wearing, but instead of moving your teeth, retainers keep your new smile in place. The length of time you need to wear retainers varies, but typically they are worn full-time for a few months, then transitioned to nighttime wear.
Can I switch to my next aligner set early?
We understand you might be eager to reach your dream smile, however, we strongly recommend that you don’t rush the treatment. Moving ahead of schedule risks causing permanent damage to your teeth, such as tooth shrinkage or instability of the tooth, which can increase the risk of your teeth falling out.
How old do I have to be to use Invisalign®?
Once your full set of adult teeth has grown in, you are eligible to use Invisalign®. It’s a great option for teens and adults!
How long is an Invisalign® treatment?
Treatment times will vary depending on each patient’s mouth. Mild cases can be as few as nine months, but more complex cases could last closer to 15 or more. Dr. Avezoff will be able to give a reliable estimate for your specific case as you create your treatment plan.
How many hours a day do I need to wear Invisalign® clear aligners?
For the treatment to be effective, you’ll need to wear your Invisalign® aligners for about 22 hours a day. This suggests only removing your aligners for meals and for brushing your teeth. It is not recommended to eat while wearing your aligners — this also means you might have to give up chewing gum for the duration of your treatment unless it’s confined around meal times. Remember: the longer you wear your aligners, the quicker you’ll finish the treatment!
