If your face is swelling quickly or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, go straight to the emergency room, not the dental office.

What to do right now

A knocked-out tooth

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it briefly without scrubbing, and keep it in milk or tucked inside your cheek. Then call the office right away, because the sooner a dentist sees it, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

A crown came off

Keep the crown and call the office. If it doesn't hurt, it can often wait for a regular visit, but the tooth underneath is exposed, so don't leave it for weeks.

A toothache

Call the office and describe the pain. Pain that keeps getting worse, or pain with swelling, needs a call the same day.

A broken tooth

Keep any pieces you find and call the office. A broken tooth needs a call the same day.
