What a dental implant is
A dental implant is a small post placed in the jawbone, where it takes the place of a tooth root. Once it has healed into the bone, it holds a crown, a bridge or a full arch of teeth. Unlike a traditional bridge, a single implant does not require reshaping the teeth on either side of the gap.

Several missing teeth
Two or more implants can hold a bridge, so several teeth are replaced without placing an implant for each one.
A full arch: All-on-4 and All-on-X
When most or all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw are missing or failing, a complete arch of fixed teeth can be attached to four or more implants. All-on-4 uses four implants per arch. All-on-X follows the same idea, with the number of implants, often four to six, chosen for your bone and bite. The teeth stay in place and are removed only by your dentist.

How treatment works

Consultation.
Tell us what you would like to change. Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and bone, takes X-rays and reviews your medical history.

Your plan.
You review the options, the number of visits, the timing and the fees before deciding on the next step. If a tooth needs to come out first or bone has been lost, your dentist explains what that means for your plan.

Implant placement.
The implant is placed under local anesthesia. Sedation is available at all three offices if you feel anxious about dental treatment.
- 04
Healing.
Over the following months, the bone grows around the implant and holds it firmly. Your dentist will tell you whether a temporary tooth or denture is right for you during this time.
- 05
Your new teeth.
The final crown, bridge or full-arch teeth are made for your bite and attached to the implants. Regular checkups and cleanings help keep them healthy.
Is an implant right for you?
Implants suit most adults with healthy gums and enough bone to hold them. Gum disease, smoking and some medical conditions can affect healing, so your dentist reviews them with you at the consultation. If your gums need attention first, periodontal care is available at all three offices.
How much do dental implants cost?
The fee depends on:
- how many implants you need and what they hold: a crown, a bridge, a full arch or a denture;
- whether a tooth has to be removed first, or bone or gum treatment is needed;
- the materials, for example ceramic implants;
- whether you choose sedation.

Questions about dental implants
How long does the implant process take?
From placement to final teeth, most implant treatment takes several months, because the implant needs time to heal into the bone. Your dentist gives you a timeline for your case at the consultation.
Does getting an implant hurt?
The area is numbed with local anesthesia during placement, and sedation is available if you are anxious. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is common. Your dentist will tell you how to manage it.
What is the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-X?
Both attach a full arch of fixed teeth to implants. All-on-4 uses four implants per arch. With All-on-X, the number of implants is chosen for your case, often four to six.
Are implants better than dentures?
Teeth held by implants do not rest on the gums, so they stay in place when you eat and speak. Dentures cost less and need no surgery. Implant-supported dentures sit in between. Your dentist can compare the options for your mouth and budget.
