What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” although patients are usually awake except for those under general anesthesia.

Reasons for Sedation Dentistry

Sedation is beneficial for:

  • Patients with dental anxiety or phobia
  • Those undergoing lengthy or complex procedures
  • Patients with a low pain threshold or sensitive teeth
  • Individuals with a strong gag reflex
FAQ

Sedation Dentistry FAQ

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, when performed by experienced professionals like Dr. Avezoff, it is very safe. You’re only given enough sedation to relax and will have team members monitoring you at all times.

Sedation helps to significantly reduce discomfort and anxiety.

The duration depends on the type of sedation used and your individual response. It is highly recommended with any type of sedation to have another family member or friend drive you home from your appointment. If you use oral sedation, which needs to be taken before your appointment, they should drive you to our office as well.

Most of our patients are good candidates for sedation dentistry, but we will always check that your safety and health are our top priority. Dr. Daniel Avezoff will check your dental and medical history to be sure that sedation will be safe and effective. If you have any allergies to medications used in the anesthesia or a history of sleep apnea, sedation dentistry might not be a safe option.

If you have a child who struggles with dental anxiety, there is a possibility they’d qualify for sedation dentistry. As with all patients, we’ll check their health history to ensure their safety. We will also take into account their level of dental anxiety, their age, and what type of dental work they need. Getting a head start on oral health while young is important, and Dr. Avezoff will prioritize your child’s safety and comfort.
